I was on such an updating roll for a while!  Until the past couple weeks, that is.  Haven’t been updating as much because I started INTERNING.

I THOROUGHLY enjoyed my funemployment the past couple months, but unfortunately, the fun had to end sometime.  What better time to try to enter a new industry than while on unemployment?  So I’m putting law on the backburner (as well as putting corporate office-speak such as putting things “on the backburner”) and focusing on retail (yes!).

For the past month, I’ve been interning at a local boutique here in Seattle and getting experience in operations, client services, mechandising, shipping, receiving.  GET A LOAD OF ME AND ALL THESE RETAIL TERMS.

I never thought I’d be 30 years old and interning somewhere, but it’s turned out to be super beneficial in getting my foot in the door in a brand new industry, a great way to be able to experience several different retail roles, and (best of all) maintain my school loan deferment (stupids).

It’s definitely different from what I was previously doing.  My brain is used in a completely different way, which is both foreign and curious.  Much more problem-solving, much less analytical.  I’m no longer sitting in front of a computer for 10 hours a day, which I both miss and don’t miss.  So much less INTERNETZ.

But so far, I LOVE IT.  I’m excited to see where this path will take me.  I must say, the best part is being surrounded on a daily basis by Rick Owens, Margiela, Jil Sander, Yohji Yamamoto, and the like.

Which brings me to pointing out MY FIRST RICK OWENS PIECE.  Not from said boutique I’m working at, but my new surroundings definitely inspired me to pull the trigger.  Plus, I found for 75%+ off.  Could not pass up YOU KNOW.  The deliberate draping and placement of seams and buttons, the oversized pockets, the oversized SEKRET pockets.  Yes, it is all they said it would be and more.

Is it Totokaelo, by chance? I’m trying to think of places that sell clothing around here cool enough for you to work in, and I know that one’s near Cap Hill.

    Love that vest. So much.

    Hi Tramanh,
I’ve been following your blog for a few years now (getting over my study breaks) and I really admire how you decided to just enter into a whole new industry (and as an intern at that)! As a recent law grad I find myself dreaming of ways I can possibly transition into a new direction but every possibility seems a little too risky and a little scary. I really admire how you are able to keep true to yourself, your interests and your personal style. Thanks for being an inspiration! :)

So you and I are too alike. Getting graduate degrees and then realizing “oops……this sucks. hmmmmm what now?”

The moment hit me after getting a B.S in biomedical science and then a master’s of science in epidemiology and working at the health dept as a zoonotic disease specialist (i.e. rabies rabies rabies prevention) for 3 years. For me, the moment was more like “Damn. How did I get here? What happened to my life? I CANNOT spend my life sitting in a cube while staring at another cube all day!”

So I quit my job, went back to school, moved back in with my folks AGAIN, and pushed back my wedding date. Hardest thing I’ve ever gone through. Now that all is said and done, I have the best job EV.ER. doing physical therapy at a nursing home. Can’t believe I ever sat at a desk all day analyzing data and talking to the citizens of Houston about bats and vaccinating their dogs. SHEESH. Never going back. NEV.ER.

Congrats to you on making the big break. VERY tough to do. But VEEEEERY worth it :)

BTW. A human with rabies is the scariest thing you will ever see……
